Navratri Day 1: Worship of Maa Shailputri – The Divine Daughter of the Mountains

“On the first day of Navratri, we bow to Maa Shailputri, the symbol of purity, strength, and devotion.”

Navratri, the nine sacred nights of devotion, begins with the worship of Maa Shailputri, the first and most important form of Navadurga. She is lovingly called the “Daughter of the Mountains”, as she was born to King Himalaya. Seated gracefully upon a bull and carrying a trident and a lotus in her hands, Maa Shailputri is the divine force that inspires stability, patience, and inner calm.

📖 The Story of Maa Shailputri

In her previous birth, Maa Shailputri was Sati, the daughter of King Daksha and the devoted wife of Lord Shiva. When King Daksha insulted Lord Shiva during a grand yajna (sacrifice), Sati could not bear the humiliation of her beloved husband and sacrificed her life in the fire of the yajna.

But her spirit of devotion was eternal. She was reborn as Parvati, the daughter of King Himalaya, and came to be known as Shailputri. She once again united with Lord Shiva, symbolizing that true devotion and love never die—they are reborn with new strength.
